2020 AGM

Developed for Canada&rsquo;s next generations of leaders, and explorers in science and space, these twenty $1,000 scholarships are open to any Canadian youth&nbsp;25 years of age or younger who are either entering or studying in a post-secondary institution or flight school. They are designed to encourage all students in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) studies or flight that could lead to future careers in the Aviation or Aerospace industry.&nbsp;
Categories include:
<ul style="font-weight: 400;">
<li>Ten $1,000 scholarships to young men and women whose parents are either current or former serving members of the RCAF and are either entering or already attending any Canadian post-secondary educational institution or flight school</li>
<li>Five $1,000 scholarships to young women who are entering or attending any Canadian post-secondary educational institution or flight school</li>
<li>Five $1,000 scholarships to any young person who is entering a Canadian post-secondary educational institution or flight school and identifies as any one of the following:

<li>Indigenous</li>
<li>Visible minority</li>
<li>LGBTQQIP2SAA</li>
<li>Person with disabilities</li>
</ul>

To apply, students need to choose one of these categories and answer two questions:

RCAF Foundation Student Scholarships

Fifty years ago from July 11, 2021, Canada's newest airshow team took to the air for their first major airshow at CFB Moose Jaw. Following in the footsteps of such eminent predecessors as the RCAF Siskins, RCN Grey Ghosts, RCAF Golden Hawks and Canadian Armed Forces Golden Centennaires, the newly named "Snowbirds" were destined to become Canadian icons with millions of fans across North America. The team adopted its name on June 25, 1971 following a "name the team" competition at the base elementary school. We now know that two young students both independently chose the name "Snowbirds" - Douglas Farmer and Cathy Tiller.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
&nbsp;The "Saskatchewan&nbsp;Homecoming Air Show" that day was billed as the largest single day airshow in North America that year - and so it was. A total of 52 Canadian Forces aircraft participated in the show supported by 65 technicians with another 15 aircraft from the USAF on display. Also performing were some of the top civilian acts in North America who became good friends with the team - Art Scholl, Al Pietsch, Joe Hughes and his wing-walker Johnny Kazian to name a few. A torrential downpour the evening before the show reduced parking spots to the extent that while 45,000 folks made it onto the base that day, another estimated 40,000 did not, being stuck in a traffic jam that stretched 16 miles back through Moose Jaw and down the highway towards Regina when the show started at 1:00 PM.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Led by Major Glen Younghusband, the team's performance that&nbsp;day was&nbsp;the first major airshow performance of approximately 2,700 official airshows the team has now flown over the last 50 years across North America. Hundreds of more flypasts have also been flown, including those flown last year and this year under "Operation Inspiration." And proudly watching from the ground that day was&nbsp;the team's&nbsp;founder, CFB Moose Jaw Base Commander Colonel O.B. Philp, along with the Commander of Training Command, Major-General Bill Carr, who opened the show followed by a flypast of a combined eight-ship of CF-104s and CF-5s from Cold Lake.
&nbsp;
So a toast today to OB&nbsp;Philp&nbsp;and his vision, the 11 volunteer instructors who flew on the team that first season and the group of BAMEO technicians who supported them during their workups in Moose Jaw. They paved the way for all of the teams who have followed. Photos are attached - but for the record here they are:

I have twice visited Vimy Ridge in France with cadets and both times found it to be a very moving experience. I also have many great experiences at Camp Saskadet as a cadet and an officer. But the best memory so far was the 2019 ACR when both of my children, Bennett and Sohpie, were cadets at the ACR with me.

</ul>
I am a teacher. I just finished my first year of teaching in a small school where I had a grade 5 and 6 split class. Teaching during a COVID year certainly had its challenges but I survived and I've taken on a new contract for next year in an even smaller town called Marsden.&nbsp;

<li aria-level="1">How did cadets impact the career you decided to pursue?&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
When I first joined 542 squadron we were fairly low on senior cadets so I began teaching classes on parade nights when I was still quite low ranking. That was when I first realized teaching was a passion of mine. I showed up each week eager and ready to pass on cadet knowledge. Later, when I became a CI, I decided to go for my Glider Pilot Instructor rating. I liked gliding and I loved teaching so I gave it a shot. This became my passion for the next three summers. I taught 11 Glider Pilot Scholarship students who were all successful. There is no more rewarding job in the world and for that reason, I am now a school teacher.&nbsp;

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">What advice do you have for current or future cadets?&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
Stick with the cadet program. There may be some hard work involved at times but the skills and experiences you gain from the program will serve you for the rest of your life. I'm sure squadron training has been quite different during these hard times and my heart breaks for those cadets who missed scholarship summer training opportunities, but once things return to normal you will be glad you had stuck through it. No other program in the world offers such amazing experiences to kids of all economic statuses. The cadet program is equal opportunity no matter if you are rich or poor. So stick with it because the experiences, friendships, and memories the cadet program offers can't be made elsewhere.&nbsp;

</ul>
The summer courses I attended as a cadet are as follows: General Training, Basic Aviation Technology and Aerospace, Advanced Aviation, Glider Pilot Scholarship training course, Power Pilot Scholarship training course, and my final summer was spent in Australia for the International Air Cadet Exchange.&nbsp;

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">Learning to fly a glider, and then an airplane had an incredible impact on me. It provided me with the confidence that I needed to pursue other interests and helped me realize that my potential was directly connected to my enthusiasm and work ethic.&nbsp;</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">As an officer, getting the opportunity to be an escort officer for the international exchange was amazing. Supervising six amazing cadets while we toured and learned about Australia was a once in a lifetime opportunity.&nbsp;</li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">I enjoy flying airplanes, travel, biking and reading. My spouse and I use our personal plane to travel for holidays, and we often rent bikes wherever we go so that we can explore more.&nbsp;</li>

I work primarily in the field of criminal defense law, however, I also serve as an inquest coroner and a tribunal member for an aviation tribunal. I have been practicing law for 11 years and am a partner in my own firm. I often take on one student or intern per year as I believe mentorship is very important.&nbsp;</li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="2">Enjoy it. There will be few times in your life where you will receive the same opportunities and be in a position to seize them.&nbsp;</li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">What is one of your most memorable moments either as a cadet or working with cadets? 
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">My most memorable moment as a cadet was traveling to Washington, DC on an Easter trip with 34 RCACS. It was a long bus trip, but that really allowed the cadets to get to know each other and the sites along the way were very interesting. We toured the Pentagon, all of the monuments, the Smithsonian and military bases which we stayed at. It was an amazing trip that I will always remember.</li>
<li>My most memorable moment as an officer was when my own two children joined 41 RCACS and became involved in the Biathlon program. My husband also joined as a CI to coach the Biathlon team and they went to Nationals three times. Branden and Sydney both medaled and Sydney won the Nikki Kedde award, which was awarded to the Top Junior Biathlete. I was very proud to have my children join Air Cadets, not that they had much choice.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Another memorable moment was when I was awarded the Officer of the Year from the National Air Cadet League in 2015. I was lucky to have my parents present with me at the awards banquet as they are the reason I joined Air Cadets.</li>

<li>I have always been a crafty person and was making jewelry for a few years, but now I have switched to quilting and it has very quickly become my passion and favorite thing to do.&nbsp;</li>

<li>As I was a former cadet, I enrolled as an officer while attending the University of Regina and started working in summer transport positions. 26 years ago I was offered a part-time position in the Air Office at the Cadet Detachment which progressed to the position I have today of Zone Trg Officer which I think is the most amazing job. Every day is new with different tasks and challenges and I get to work with an amazing team headed by LCdr Cann and an equally amazing team of dedicated Commanding Officers and LHQ staff. Visiting the corps and squadrons and seeing the cadets training and having fun never seems like work, I truly love this position.</li>

<li>One of the skills that I have learned and improved on from the program was public speaking. I definitely regret not taking part in the Effective Speaking competitions as a cadet as I have witnessed many amazing speeches by cadets over the years and know that program would have made it much easier for me and would have given me the skills much sooner.&nbsp;</li>

<li>The cadet program has so many different aspects to offer teens that they may not get from other youth activities or sports like citizenship, leadership, military values, and ethics. I do not know of any other program where you can go gliding one weekend and go on a field exercise the next. By putting in an honest effort as a cadet there are so many personal rewards, and I can honestly say you will definitely get more than you put in.</li>

<li>As I was a late joiner I only attended Basic in Penhold, AB (the current GT course), Airframe Technical Training in Borden for 6 weeks and was a Staff Cadet for Summer Transport in Moose Jaw for 7 weeks.</li>

<li>I would say go for it. Leading and training cadets and seeing them grow from shy young 12-year-old cadets into confident and mature leaders at 18 is so very rewarding. There are also many training opportunities for the staff that not only help in the cadet program but also in your personal life.&nbsp;</li>

<li>I am currently finishing a 16-month internship at Calian, Advanced Technologies (formerly SED Systems) where I am helping to design and implement satellite management and communications systems. Currently, I am involved with developing a system that&nbsp;will manage a new pair of satellites to provide internet connectivity to homes, ships, and airplanes in the arctic regions for services such as in-flight WiFi. I enjoy working with a close-knit team (and sometimes people from other teams), to create products impacting millions of people on an international scale.</li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">What is one of your most memorable moments either as a cadet or working with cadets?&nbsp;</li>

<li>My first solo - in a glider at Gimli. It was a surreal experience. With all the flight training we completed beforehand, nothing could compare to being in the air, at 2,000 feet, by myself.</li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">What is one of your most memorable moments either as a cadet or working with cadets?&nbsp;</li>
<li style="list-style-type: none;">
<ul>
<li>The highlight of my years spent as a Sea Cadet in the &rsquo;70s was being granted the privilege of attending a ship deployment in HMCS Saskatchewan with the Royal Canadian Navy. This deployment, when I was in Grade 10 in High School, integrated me in the Deck Department (seamanship) in the Ship on a training cruise down the west coast of North America.&nbsp; Manning the distance line on RAS (Replenishment at Sea) in 40-foot seas where the spray freezes on contact with your body or relaying ammunition from the ship&rsquo;s magazine to the 3&rdquo; gun on the destroyer, and seeing ports in the United States and Mexico were incredible experiences for a prairie guy of 16 years of age.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

<li>I joined the Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) at the age of 19 and have worked extensively with all three elements, Army Cadet Corps and Sea Cadet Corps in Regina, and Air Cadet Summer Training Centres during the summer months.&nbsp; For the last 30 years, I have been employed by the Regional Cadet Support Unit out of Winnipeg in a variety of positions such as: Provincial Music, Marksmanship, and Biathlon Coordinator, Regional Cadet Music Advisor, Regional Common Training Officer, Training Support Officer, Officer in Charge Common Training, Administration Officer, and for the past five years, the Officer Commanding the Cadet Program in Central Prairie Area.</li>

<li>As a shy young man, the Cadet program has helped me find my voice.&nbsp; My confidence to speak to, and lead groups of people of a variety of backgrounds is directly attributable to my time as a cadet.&nbsp; Additionally, my time as a cadet taught me how to analyze problems and implement action plans to solve issues.&nbsp;</li>

<li>Take advantage of every opportunity that you can within the Air Cadet Program and don&rsquo;t be in a hurry to choose employment over learning as a cadet.&nbsp; You have your whole life to work, but you can only participate in cadet courses until you are 19. Also, don&rsquo;t assume that your desire to participate is enough to earn the spot.&nbsp; You must put a great deal of effort into earning your positions and that, in and of itself, carries an obligation to &ldquo;give something back&rdquo; in some way to Canadian Society.</li>

<li>Being a Sea Cadet and a Gold Award holder of the Duke of Edinburgh&rsquo;s Award has instilled in me the need to continually offer my time and talent to my community in many ways.&nbsp; I have been a volunteer with the ALS Society of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Fund and the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal served on church parish and synod councils, and community band boards in Winnipeg and Saskatoon.&nbsp; I am currently the Treasurer of the Saskatoon Brass Band and the Vice President of the Duke of Edinburgh&rsquo;s Award in Saskatchewan.</li>

<li>None of your perceived obstacles in your life (physical, social, financial, emotional) will stand in your way of achieving what you want if you are prepared to work hard for that goal.&nbsp; The world doesn&rsquo;t owe you a fulfilling life, but you do owe something to the world and every small contribution you make to make your community a better place, makes the world a better place.</li>

<li>Being an Officer in the Cadet Instructor Cadre has given me an extraordinary life full of diverse experiences.&nbsp; All of you who enroll in the CIC will be able to contribute to society in ways that are becoming more critical with the challenges that we are facing on the globe in the years ahead. Indeed, you will have opportunities of service that I can&rsquo;t even predict, but I know that society NEEDS what our program has to offer and they also NEED you to serve.</li>

Awards from 2021 SKACL AGM

The SKACL was pleased to host the 2022 National Air Cadet League Annual General Meeting in Saskatoon earlier this month. ACL members from coast-to-coast convened to discuss administrative and legal details, to help support the Air Cadet Program in Canada.
&nbsp;
In addition to meetings and discussions, guests were invited to explore all that Saskatoon has to offer. Our visitors explored everything from the Batoche National Historic Site, to the famed Remai Art Gallery. To wrap things up and celebrate, the SKACL hosted a banquet at the Saskatchewan Aviation Museum, where guests enjoyed a Ukrainian meal while surrounded by vintage and historical aircraft!

We are proud to have played host to such a successful, in-person event!

SKACL Hosts National Air Cadet League AGM

We are stoked to see our cadets in the local news, because of the amazing summer training opportunities they are pursuing! WO1 Benjamin of 624 Tisdale Squadron is attending the Glider Pilot Training Course and was recently featured in a SaskToday article! Read it below!

BRANDON, Man. &ndash; The thrill of flight is something that interests many, and local cadet Samuel Benjamin of 624 Tisdale, Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, is spending his summer pursuing his dreams of flight at Brandon Cadet Training Centre as he earns his Transport Canada glider pilot licence during the seven-week glider pilot training course.
Following a rigorous and competitive selection process, which included attending ground school online, writing an entrance exam, a review of their cadet file and school marks, and an interview, Cadet Benjamin was just one of 28 cadets from Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Colombia selected for the course in Brandon this summer.
Benjamin&rsquo;s favourite part so far has been, &ldquo;being part of the air operations and getting to apply skills as well as knowledge that I learned in ground school.&rdquo;
Benjamin joined air cadets in October of 2017 because he was interested in a military-like environment. &ldquo;Getting to work alongside like-minded people while we develop and grow progressively over the years,&rdquo; was the best part of the cadet program, he explained.
Air cadets have opportunities to participate in flight activities and select senior cadets may even be chosen to obtain their glider or power pilot licence. Whether earning a glider pilot licence or private pilot licence, these cadets wear their wings with pride.

The cadet program is open to all youth between the ages of 12-18 and develops confident, self-sufficient leaders who form lasting friendships and are engaged in their communities. Air Cadets learn about aviation technologies, air crew survival, and how to fly.
Adults are also needed to help train, administer and supervise the local youth involved in the cadet program. Becoming part of the cadet program is easier than you may think, it&rsquo;s a lot of fun, and the skills you learn are likely transferable to your regular employment.  No previous military or cadet experience is needed.&nbsp;

Tisdale Cadet Pursues Flight Dreams in Brandon

Meet Ann Lopachuk, a former Air Cadet with 624 Tisdale Squadron in Saskatchewan. Originally from Ukraine, Ann moved to Tisdale at the age of 12, and joined the Air Cadet Program in 2013, about 6 months after arriving in Canada. She quickly rose through the ranks and reached the rank of Flight Sergeant, before having to move to Saskatoon to pursue her post-secondary education.
&nbsp;
Initially, she joined cadets upon the recommendation of her parents, who first saw youth participating in drill exercises in their cadet uniforms. At first, she only joined cadets to make her parents happy, but she quickly realized just how great the Cadet Program is. As a 12 year old, she had little knowledge of aviation and leadership. However, through the Air Cadet Program, she was able to discover her inner &ldquo;aviation nerd&rdquo;, and learned all about different leadership styles.
&nbsp;
Throughout her 5 years as a cadet, Ann participated in a range of activities and training opportunities. She was a member of her squadron marksmanship team as well as a biathlete for several years. She also attended 4 summer camps&mdash; General Training, Basic Aviation, the Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor course, and one as a staff cadet in Whitehorse. She notes that her most cherished cadet memories were made at these camps, and that her courses allowed her to make close friends from all across Canada&mdash; friends that are still very close today!
&nbsp;
Today, she is working towards her commercial pilots licence, and hopes to be a pilot at an international airline. She also works as a Ramp Coordinator with Executive Aviation, directing and organizing ramp operations for WestJet, Flair, Swoop and Sunwing flights in Saskatoon. She says that the Air Cadet Program has helped her learn about the aviation industry, helping her realize her goal of being a pilot, and helping her become a strong, organized leader at the airport.
&nbsp;
She says that the Air Cadet Program is very fun, and that it teaches youth about leadership, communication with a range of people, as well as discipline.

Spotlight - Ann Lopachuk

Meet Audrey Wishlow, a former Air Cadet with 566 Squadron in Canora, Saskatchewan! She was an Air Cadet from 1989 to 1994 and attained the rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class.
&nbsp;
She joined Air Cadets because she wanted to learn how to fly. She states, however, that she gained much more than her Pilot&rsquo;s Licence through Air Cadets. She learned the basics of survival and became more confident in herself, her leadership and interpersonal skills.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
In her 5 years with cadets, she participated in a wide range of activities and training opportunities. She was on the drill team, participated in volleyball tournaments and was part of effective speaking. She attended a variety of summer training courses, as well, including the Glider and Power Pilot Training Courses.
&nbsp;
She says she enjoyed everything in the Air Cadet Program. She loved going flying, of course, but also visits to Camp Saskadet (even back when there was no running water there!), annual trips, the cadet exchange program and participating in Remembrance Day Programs!
&nbsp;
After finishing up with the Air Cadet Program, she went on and earned her Commercial Pilots License, along with a diploma in Aviation Management. She started off as a flight instructor, and got into corporate aviation. She later started working as the general manager of a flight school in Regina. Since she wanted to give back to the Air Cadet Program, she managed to get the power pilot training contact at her flight school, meaning she would be helping train the next generations of Air Cadet pilots. She helped host Christmas in July for the cadets, and helped out with the Wings Parade, knowing exactly how hard they had worked during the course. She now works for the Government of Saskatchewan, in Aviation Operations, up in La Ronge. She works as the Director of Safety, and the Assistant Operations Manager.
&nbsp;
She has continued to give back to the Air Cadet Program&ndash; organizing tours of her workplace, allowing cadets to see the firefighting aircraft they operate, attending a mess dinner in Regina as a guest speaker, acting as the Reviewing Officer in Foam Lake, and having loads of fun with power pilot course students (even surprising them by wearing her own flight suit from 27 years ago)!

We are so glad that she has remained involved with the Air Cadet Program in Saskatchewan!

Fun Fact! If you visit the Alberta Aviation Museum in Edmonton, you might see her, as part of an artifact collection! She replicated the first airmail delivery by Katherine Stinson for them!

Spotlight - Audrey Wishlow

Meet Jai Willems, a former Air Cadet with 702 Lynx Squadron in Saskatoon, SK. He was an active Air Cadet for 6 years, between 2013 and 2019, and achieved the rank of Warrant Officer First Class; the highest attainable rank for a cadet.
&nbsp;
Willems originally joined Air Cadets because he was interested in aviation. The Air Cadet Program allowed him to do just that, as he went on to earn both his glider and power pilot licenses through the cadets.
&nbsp;
He participated in 5 summer training courses throughout his cadet career; nearly all of which had an aerospace focus. He notes that one of his favourite life memories was his first solo flight, as it had been one of his lifelong dreams.
&nbsp;
Outside of the many aerospace and aviation activities he participated in, he was also able to take part in his squadron&rsquo;s drill, survival and curling teams, helping him grow and learn about his own interests.
&nbsp;
He says his favourite part about the Air Cadet Program were the summer training courses that allowed him to specialize in unique domains, experience a variety of new things, and helped him meet new people with the same passions and life goals as him.
&nbsp;
Willems is currently on a 16-month work term, between his 3rd and 4th years of university. He currently studies aerospace engineering at the University of Toronto, in the Engineering Science program. He says the Air Cadet Program helped him get accepted into one of the most competitive post-secondary programs in the country. Not only has learning about aviation through the Cadet Program helped him in his studies, but it prepared him to move provinces for school and has taught him about self-discipline and focus.
&nbsp;
A fun fact about Willems is that he collects moon lander autographs! He currently has autographs from 5 out of 12 astronauts who have walked on the moon, which we think is pretty amazing!

Spotlight - Jai Willems

The Air Cadet League of Canada, Saskatchewan Provincial Committees 81st Annual General Meeting Conference and Awards banquet was held on October 21, 22 and 23, 2022 at the Doubletree Hotel in Regina.
After two years of virtual meetings, everyone was enthusiastic about meeting in person.&nbsp;
Friday Nights registration and social was well attended. The opportunity to catch up with and meet new friends was welcomed by all. Congratulations to Tina Bousfield on winning the registration door prize, a portable Bluetooth speaker from Visions. Friday night also saw the start of the Silent Auction Bidding!
The training meetings started early Saturday morning. Informative speeches by Lt Col Kevin Diduck, Commanding Officer Regional Cadet Support Unit NW region, Terri Hinton &ndash; National rep on Risk Management and Muhammad Abdullah University of Regina Professor on cultural inclusion within the Muslim community were all very informative and well received
At the COPA, Canadian Owners and Pilots Association Luncheon, Candace Pardo, provided insight into how squadrons and the COPA organization can work together to provide more flying opportunities for Saskatchewan Youth.&nbsp; For more information please contact visit their website at skcopa.ca.
The Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday Afternoon.
Our incoming chair, Curtis Bousfield, hosted the Awards Banquet on Saturday Evening. After a delicious meal, numerous awards were presented to deserving organizations, volunteers and cadets. A very successful Silent Auction came to a close with a total of $ 1,000.00 being raised for the Air Cadet program. An Inspiring speech from our keynote speaker, Lt Col Riel Erickson, from the # 2 Canadian Forces Flight Training Center, Moose Jaw. Her speech on her travels and the Cadet Program was very well received.
Sunday morning brought SSC Training, a Board of Directors Meeting, and a significant snowfall.&nbsp;

A great informative weekend was had by all!

The Saskatchewan Air Cadet League is seeking a highly motivated and creative Summer Student (current university or high school student) to aid in maintaining and developing the League&rsquo;s social media presence, marketing efforts, and communications with squadrons.
This highly flexible position will provide opportunities for growth, development and learning in various areas.
Responsibilities:
<ul>
<li>Manage social media accounts, including Facebook and Instagram, as well as the possibility of a YouTube channel</li>
<li>Create engaging and visually appealing content for social media channels, websites, and other digital platforms</li>
<li>Creating new, and maintaining existing Google Ad campaigns and optimizing audience engagement</li>
<li>Develop marketing materials such as posters, brochures, and flyers.</li>
<li>Connect with League Members to create content for newsletters and social media features</li>
<li>Track and analyze social media metrics to measure the success of campaigns and posts, and adjust strategies as needed</li>
<li>Respond to inquiries and comments on social media and other digital channels</li>
<li>Attend League events and participate as a member of the media</li>
<li>Perform other related duties as assigned</li>
</ul>
Skills and Qualifications:
<ul>
<li>Willingness to learn, quick learner</li>
<li>Flexible project management skills</li>
<li>Time management skills</li>
<li>Strong verbal and written communication skills</li>
</ul>
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

<li>Experience or familiarity with the Air Cadet Program, and Air Cadet League Structure</li>
<li>Familiarity with all SKACL media-related platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Linktree, YouTube, Canva, etc.</li>
<li>Photography and videography experience</li>
<li>Experience with React or NodeJS is an asset</li>

Camp Saskadet is a Tri-Service Provincial Cadet Camp located at Round Lake. The building of the camp began on July 5, 1975 with construction being done by Air, Army and Sea Cadet programs. Today, Camp Saskadet provides opportunities for camping, outdoor recreation, physical fitness training, biathlon, and survival training! Next year Camp Saskadet will be celebrating its 50th anniversary!

SKACL Award Nominations

Colin joined the cadet program in 1989, when he joined as a cadet at 107 Spitfire squadron in Saskatoon. He transitioned to serving as a CIC officer in the squadron afterwards. He worked as the Supply, Admin, UHRA, Band Officer and Training Officer during his time with 107 and also worked two summers with Summer Movements in Regina and four summers at Penhold Air Cadet Summer Training Centre. After a brief break, Colin rejoined the cadet program as a civilian instructor at 574 RCACS in Martensville, w here he has been since they started operating there.
&nbsp;
Speaking about his previous activities, Colin said:
&nbsp;
&ldquo;This will sound rather cheezy, but one favorite memory was putting on my uniform for the first time and stepping onto the parade square. Yes, I had creases in the wrong place, railroad tracks on my pants, maybe a loose thread or two on my shoulder flashes, but the feeling I had was nothing but excitement. I have a lot of fond memories throughout my cadet career, but I don't think anything matches the excitement of putting on that uniform for the first time. I do have another favorite memory and that is when I represented 107 RCACS at the 50th Anniversary Gathering of Air Cadets back in 1991, which celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Air Cadet League of Canada. Imagine one Air Cadet from every squadron in Canada (over 400 of us), gathering for one weekend in Quebec City. We toured all of the usual tourist spots, participated in a parade through Old Quebec, attended a huge air show and then had dinner with the Snowbirds after that air show. We climbed to the top of Mount St. Anne and went on a big river cruise down the St. Lawrence. That was the first big trip away from home for me and my first trip on an airliner. Any thoughts of being homesick quickly went away when I started meeting friends and hanging out...not to mention all of the fun activities that were planned for us. I kept in touch with some of those friends for a while, but like life, people drift apart and lose contact, but to this day, I still have very fond memories of that trip.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
&ldquo;Whether it has been as a volunteer, Civilian Instructor or CIC Officer, cadets has given me plenty of opportunities, from the smallest things like driving a van full of cadets to a MUSCON in Moose Jaw to working with many cadets, whether it be at summer camps or when I worked summer movements. Working with the cadets is and always has been the biggest and best opportunity afforded me while working as an adult staff member.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
&ldquo;I will always recommend the cadet program to anyone who will listen to me because it opens up so many doors for kids today, which you just cannot get with any other youth program in the country. What other program offers you a chance to get your glider or power license, sail on a real military ship during the summer, learn how to parachute, go visit another country? What other youth program gives you a sense of self, along with a sense of camaraderie than the cadet program?&rdquo;
&nbsp;
&ldquo;I think the biggest thing I have learned from being involved with cadets is the fact that it provides structure to a youth's life that they may not be able to get with any other kind of youth organization, or even organized sports. You can come in off the street as you are and almost immediately, given tools to succeed at anything you want to do. What you learn as a cadet will apply to anything you do in your life after your time in the program is over. You can be the shiest kid coming through the doors on day one and thinking you'll never be able to make a friend, and then next thing you know, that shy kid is no longer shy and has made many friends.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
&ldquo;I think other people should join the cadet program, whether it be as a cadet or as an adult staff member, because of the challenges that the program can present to a person. Cadets will always challenge you to become better at something, whether it's simply polishing your boots to putting a good lesson plan together for a class or organizing an entire sports or survival weekend. If you want to prove to yourself what you are capable of, cadets is ready to challenge you.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
&ldquo;If you're a young kid reading this and you've been thinking about cadets and whether it's for you, I highly urge you to give it a try.&rdquo;
